I have to say, I like the simplicity of the duct tape better.
Most of the sewing patterns I've seen require you to add a layer of vinyl or clear adhesive to reinforce the areas that have been stitched. (Duct tape seems a lot easier and more economical—and you're a lot more likely to have a roll of it lying around rather than scraps of clear vinyl.)
I'll work on finding (or making) some better instructions. In the mean time:
You'll need
- Empty and cleaned (mylar) coffee bags
- Duct tape in the color(s) of your choice
- Scissors
- A bag pattern
Instructions
- Cut your coffee bags along one side to allow you to open them up to their full width. (You may need to cut the bottoms off.)
- For the shorter sides, cut your coffee bags down each side, while leaving the bottom in tact. This will make one long piece that can then wrap from the side to the bottom of the bag.
- Wash the inside with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly. This will remove the coffee oils and allow the duct tape to adhere solidly.
- Use duct tape on all edges and seams. You may also want to reinforce the bottom seams with extra tape.
- Finish off the top edge with duct tape before adding the handles.
- Handles are made by sandwiching two pieces of duct tape (sticky sides together), while leaving the tail ends free. These will get taped to the inner and outer sides of the bag.
